Crowlands Wind Farm

PROJECT SCOPE:

  • Route Survey
  • Planning & Permit
  • Delivery
  • Storage & Offload

Turbine transport through steep, winding country

The Crowlands Wind Farm consisted of 39 Senvion MM92 wind turbine generators, situated in western Victoria. ARES transported all wind turbine components from the Port of Portland to site, a distance of 250km one way.

Coordinating Scale Across Challenging Terrain

Transported all components for 39 Senvion turbines across the 250-kilometre route from the Port of Portland to Crowlands Wind Farm in western Victoria. The project formed part of three major wind developments delivered simultaneously for Senvion Australia.

Careful port management kept components organised across shared storage areas, while specialist trailers and additional towing equipment supported oversized loads through regional towns and steep terrain. Detailed coordination enabled the safe delivery of some of the longest tower sections transported by the team.

Project Challenges

  • 01

    Steep and Undulating Terrain

Winding hills and road gradients of up to 20 per cent created difficult conditions near the site. Larger loads required additional towing support, with a three-truck combination used to climb the steepest sections safely.

  • 02

    A 250-Kilometre Route

Components travelled northeast from Portland towards Hamilton, around the southern edge of the Grampians and along the Pyrenees Highway. The five-to-six-hour journey required careful planning through regional towns and changing road conditions.

  • 03

    Shared Port Operations

Crowlands and Murra Warra shared storage at the Port of Portland, with components for around 100 turbines managed across both projects. Cargo had to be carefully separated by component type and destination across berthside and overflow storage areas.

  • 04

    Record-Length Tower Sections

The 36-metre mid-tower sections created truck and trailer combinations measuring 57 metres long. Special bookend trailers and precise manoeuvring were required to safely navigate around Hamilton, Ararat and surrounding road infrastructure.

Cargo Carried

A breakdown of the specialised cargo transported as part of this project.

0
SENVION WIND TURBINES

Each MM92 turbine stands almost 150m tall (base to tip), and produces 2.05MW of green power.

0
LONGEST TOWER SECTION

The top tower section was the longest we have ever transported, requiring special bookend trailers.

0
KM’s TO SITE

The journey took around 5-6 hours, including slowdowns and fatigue breaks.

0
TOTAL DELIVERIES

These include turbine components, towers, blades, transformers and containers.
