Oversize precast transport for Melbourne's megaproject

Delivering oversize concrete components for one of Melbourne’s largest infrastructure builds.

ARES Group played a major role in the West Gate Tunnel Project (WGTP) by transporting thousands of oversized precast concrete components from regional manufacturing sites into Melbourne. Over four years, the team moved around 2,000 units, including crossheads, matchcast segments, planks, capitals, and Super Tees.

Keeping a Major Infrastructure Project Moving

Over four years, ARES transported around 2,000 oversized precast concrete components from regional manufacturing sites to construction sites across Melbourne. Each movement was carefully planned and coordinated to align with manufacturing, site access and installation schedules.

Managing a high volume of specialised loads over an extended project period, ARES maintained a consistent and reliable transport operation. The team adapted to changing site conditions, route requirements and delivery schedules, helping ensure critical components arrived safely and on time to support the continued progress of the West Gate Tunnel Project.

Project Challenges

  • 01

    Colossal crossheads

Transporting 72 bridge crossheads, each weighing over 140 tonnes, required a fully engineered logistics solution. ARES designed custom transport frames and modified heavy haul trailer configurations to lower the centre of gravity and evenly distribute the load. Night-time convoys, supported by accredited pilot vehicles, VMS boards and controlled speeds as low as 5 km/h over bridges and culverts, ensured the safe and efficient delivery of the heaviest oversized loads ARES has transported.

  • 02

    Super size Tees

The Super Tee bridge beams combined serious weight with awkward length, up to 80 tonnes and 24 metres. No standard trailer could handle both at once. We ran a four-axle low loader at the front and a jinker trailer at the rear, which solved the weight and the dimensions in one configuration.

  • 03

    Match Cast Transport & Storage

We delivered the transport and offloading solution for 17 match cast segments, each weighing up to 80 tonnes (1,400+ tonnes total).
Bespoke standing frame and offloading systems eliminated the need for cranes, minimised weather delays and downtime, and maximised turnaround efficiency through safe, streamlined storage and handling operations.

  • 04

    Echuca planks

The bridge planks were the only components not coming from Benalla. Made in Echuca and up to 25 metres long, they took a winding route through Shepparton and Seymour into Melbourne, without a direct Hume Highway link. Our extendable trailers handled them easily. They are built to carry 70-metre wind turbine blades, so 25-metre planks were never going to be a stretch.

Cargo Carried

0
CROSSHEADS

These massive concrete elements sit on top of columns and support the bridge deck above.

0
MATCH CAST

Coming in sets of 17, each segment had to be installed by a specialised launching gantry crane over Footscray Rd.

0
PLANKS

The only components not coming from Benalla, the bridge planks measured up to 25m in length and were transported from Echuca.

SUPER TEES

These precast bridge beams weighed in at 80 tons and are designed to carry the concrete road deck above.

We are very pleased with ARES and the logistics service they have provided at Biala Wind Farm for WTG transport. Their comprehensive solution covers every key aspect including planning, permitting, vessel discharge, and delivery to site, and the daily operation is well managed by highly skilled professionals. Their performance has been recognised by not only the project team but also our subcontractors. The flexibility and efficiency they have demonstrated throughout the Biala project helped us achieve the target under budget. I trust they will continue with excellent performance on future projects and wish for the next opportunity to work with them again.
