Level Crossing Removal Project 1

PROJECT SCOPE:

  • Route Survey
  • Planning & Permit
  • Delivery
  • Storage & Offload

Overnight beam transport, timed around live rail

The Caulfield-to-Dandenong (CTD) Level Crossing Removal Project (LCRP) included the removal of 9 level crossings, an elevated “Skyrail” section of track and 5 new elevated train stations in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs. ARES were contracted to transport oversized concrete beams, pillars and crossheads for the project.

Delivering Around a Live Rail Network

Transported oversized precast concrete components for Melbourne’s Caulfield-to-Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project between December 2016 and July 2017. The work supported the removal of nine level crossings, the construction of the elevated Skyrail and five new stations.

Detailed route planning and tightly coordinated overnight movements kept hundreds of components moving from Melton to multiple construction sites. Every time-sensitive delivery met its scheduled rail closure window, helping construction progress without disrupting the operating railway network.

Project Challenges

  • 01

    Moving Through Melbourne

Oversized components travelled from Melton to sites between Murrumbeena and Noble Park. Approved routes crossed the West Gate Bridge and passed through the Burnley Tunnel, requiring detailed planning through some of Melbourne’s busiest transport corridors.

  • 02

    High-Volume Night Deliveries

Around 400 Super Tee beams were delivered at a rate of four to six per night. Components travelled overnight, were unloaded during the early morning and returned to Melton in preparation for the following night’s deliveries.

  • 03

    Working Around Active Rail Lines

Construction took place beside operational railway lines, making delivery timing critical. More than half of the project’s deliveries were coordinated with scheduled rail occupations and closures, with all time-sensitive components arriving without disrupting Metro Trains services.

  • 04

    Specialised Concrete Transport

The project included oversized beams, pillars and heavy crossheads for the elevated rail sections. Custom trailers fitted with handrails and dedicated safety systems supported the secure transport and handling standards required for a major Tier 1 infrastructure project.
