Increasing Component Size
The new turbines were more than twice the height of those at the neighbouring Crookwell Wind Farm, with blades three times longer and nacelles five times heavier, creating significantly greater transport challenges.
Innovation
PROJECT SCOPE:
The Crookwell 2 Wind Farm consisted of 28 GE Renewables 3.4-130 wind turbine generators, situated near Goulburn in New South Wales. ARES transported all wind turbine components from the Port of Port Kembla to site, a distance of 189km one way.
Transported all components for 28 GE turbines across the 189-kilometre route from Port Kembla to Crookwell 2 Wind Farm. The program managed increasingly large turbine components, overnight movements through Goulburn and challenging regional road conditions.
Police escorts, pilot vehicles and experienced crews helped each load navigate busy intersections, tight corners and difficult winter weather. Careful planning, communication and patience kept deliveries moving safely through rain, frost, strong winds and heavy fog.
The new turbines were more than twice the height of those at the neighbouring Crookwell Wind Farm, with blades three times longer and nacelles five times heavier, creating significantly greater transport challenges.
Many oversized components had to travel through Goulburn during the early hours of the morning, supported by police escorts and strategically positioned pilot vehicles to safely manage intersections and local traffic.
Deliveries took place throughout winter, exposing crews to rain, strong winds, frost and heavy fog. Reduced visibility sometimes required vehicles to travel at crawling speed or stop until conditions improved.
The 189-kilometre journey from Port Kembla required oversized loads to navigate Picton Road, the Hume Highway and several tight corners through Goulburn before reaching the wind farm’s two site entrances.
Cargo Carried
Each turbine stands 160m tall (base to tip), has 4 tower sections and produces 3.4MW of green power.
These were the turbine blades, which were carried to site on our special telescopic trailers.
The journey took around 4-5 hours, including slowdowns and fatigue breaks.
These include turbine components, towers, blades, transformers and containers.
